Software
Drupal CMS, basically a website in a box. Drupal is technically the very best of the open source CMS systems out there. It has an emphasis on code correctness, following a centralized design philosophy, and proactive security. While Drupal may have a steep learning curve the pay off is well worth it, maintaining and growing Drupal sites securely is much easier than any other CMS. And the flexibility of the system is second to none. There may be easier systems, there may be glitzier systems, but none are better overall than Drupal.
Geany, a fast, lightweight and very flexible Integrated Development Environment for numerous programming and markup languages. I use this editor extensively when not forced to use bigger IDE's by project requirements, simply put, it's great. I even hear they have a Windows version working.
GIMP, the Gnu Image Manipulation Program is the open source equivalent to photoshop. An excellent multi layered, image manipulation program capable of handling just about any image format with ease. The GIMP can also handle GIF animations and conversions from SVG to other image file formats.
Inkscape, an open source vector graphics program. Vector graphics describe an image by using mathematical models, which creates nice sharp images. This type of image creation requires very little artistic skill, just creativity and effort to make professional quality images.
OpenOffice.org, the best open source office suite. A must have for any serious writing.
Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron", the worlds easiest and most flexible Linux operating system. All of the software mentioned here is just a quick point and click away with this OS on your desktop.
